Irish Moss

Description

Reddish brown seaweed growing up to 10 inches. Flat and forked plant body with a fan-shaped outline. Crowded terminal lobes. Turns a translucent yellow or whitish color when dried. Length: 3-6 inches.




Common Uses

It is used as a demulcent for digestive conditions, but is most often used to treat respiratory ailments because of its expectorant properties. It has also been shown to successfully treat acid indigestion, gastritis, and urinary infections. It also has blood-thinning properties.




History

Irish moss is up to 80% mucilage, which is used in large quantities by the food industry to make jellies or aspic and as a smooth binder. It also contains vitamins A and B1. It is also used as a skin softener in lotions. Because it is a strong blood thinner, it shouldn't be used by those on anti-coagulants.
