Description

Shrub with green oval-oblong leaves covered with resin dots. Clusters of red flowers are followed by black berries in midsummer. Height: 1-3 feet. Blooms: Mid-late spring




Common Uses

The leaves are used to treat issues such as dysentery and, though less often, Bright's disease. Huckleberry is also astringent.




History

Cherokee Indians chewed the leaves for dysentery and indigestion. Many other tribes used huckleberry as a blood tonic, as well as for colds, rheumatism, kidney ailments, tapeworm, and venereal disease. It is also used as a purple dye and in many culinary recipes.
