Horsetail

Family:
Equisetaceae
Latin Name:
Equisetum arvense

Description

Fern-like perennial with a rhizome that looks like a string of beads. Flowers top stalks during its fertile stage, and the leaves are sharp-toothed ringed leaf sheaths that occur along a bamboo-like stalk. During the infertile stage, leaves are needle-like in whorls.

Common Uses

It is known to be a general metabolic stimulator, increases the resistance of connective tissue, and also helps treat the long-term damage of lung disease. It may also help speed up the repair process for damaged connective tissue. It contains silica, which is necessary for maintaining flexible arterial walls, especially as we age, since the body's natural levels decline as we grow older.

History

Horsetail may be the only herb you can use to sand wood because of its high silica content. Prehistoric horsetail plants were giant, fern-like trees, and are thought to be among the oldest of all plants.
