Description

Deciduous tree with large, domed crown, having clusters of pink and white flowers in summer, followed by spiny, green fruits containing medicinal seeds. Height: Up to 80 feet. Blooms: May-June




Common Uses

Horse Chestnut has been effective in reducing edema, pain, fatigue, tenseness, and itching associated with Chronic Venous Insufficiency (a circulatory ailment). Recent early studies suggest that horse chestnut may treat pain and tenderness associated with impact injuries when used topically.




History

One of the first known anti-coagulants, it was used as a safer alternative to quinine in Europe. Poland is a major producer of horse chestnut extracts used in modern medicine. Historically used in treating a wide variety of cardiovascular ailments.
