Horehound

Family:
Labiatae
Latin Name:
Marrubium vulgare

Description

Branching stems give horehound a bushy look. It has white flowers in dense whorls and opposite, paired leaves that are long, soft, hairy and rounded. It produces barbed seeds that contain nutlets clustered in fours. Height: 2-3 feet. Blooms in summer.

Common Uses

Horehound is used widely around the world to treat bronchitis and coughs, but it has also been shown to be useful to stimulate the appetite and normalize the heartbeat (through the compound marrubiin). Marrubiin and the essential oils dilate the arteries and help ease lung congestion.

History

Horehound takes its name from Horus, the Egyptian god of sky and light. Horehound syrups and cough drops were used as early as the 1600s in England, and later made their way to America.
