Description

The stem twines from left to right, and, although no fruit forms until the 3rd year, the root is strong and perennial. Leaves resemble grape leaves, and male and female flowers grow on separate plants. Flowers are green-yellow catkins. Blooms July-August.




Common Uses

The strobiles of hops are mildly sedative. They are suited for treating insomnia and relaxing nerves and smooth muscles. Hops also helps with digestive complaints such as indigestion, ulcers, and irritable bowel syndrome.




History

Scandinavians made a course cloth from the vines, and brewers in France and Germany in the 9th and 10th centuries used hops as a preservative to make their brews last longer. It has been used to treat insomnia, nervous heart conditions, cramps, boils, jaundice, hysteria, and a host of other ailments throughout the centuries.
