Description

Erect, mostly branched annual with a dark green to red stem. It has alternate, glabrous leaves that are palmately divided into 3-7 lobes. Flowers are large, red to yellow, with dark centers, followed by a large red calyx surrounding seed pods. Height: Up to 3.5 meters.




Common Uses

Leaves and flowers are used as a tonic tea for digestive and kidney function. Its seeds and fruit are used for their emollient, diuretic, laxative, and sedative properties in many countries throughout the world.




History

The fresh calyx is used in salads, jellies, soups, sauces, pickles, and puddings. It can also be roasted and used as a coffee substitute. It is the source of a red beverage called "jamaica" in Mexico. Fibers from the stem can be used to make sackcloth, twine, and cord.
