Grape Leaves and Seeds

Family:
Vitaceae
Latin Name:
Vitis vinifera

Description

Deciduous climber with erect rambling stems, tendrils, palm-shaped leaves, clusters of small pale green flowers, and bunches of fruit (grapes) that vary from green to black.

Common Uses

Grape leaves are astringent and anti-inflammatory. They are used to treat diarrhea, heavy menstrual bleeding, and uterine hemorrhage. An antioxidant compound in the seeds has been shown to help protect against free radicals and to reinforce the structure of collagen, which makes up blood vessels and skin.

History

Nicholas Culpeper, 1652: "It is a most gallant tree of the sun very sympathetical to the body of man, and that's the reason spirit of wine is the greatest cordial amongst all vegetables." In ancient Greece, the grapevine was the symbol of civilization.
