Ginkgo Biloba
Family:
Ginkgoaceae |
Latin Name:
Ginkgo biloba |
Description
Tree with two-lobed leaves; weather hardy and disease resistant. Female trees produce messy, bad-smelling fruits, while male trees do not. Height: Up to 80 feet.
Common Uses
Studies have shown that ginkgo improves blood flow to capillaries in the brain, ears, eyes, limbs, and other parts of the body. In addition, ginkgo has many anti-oxidant properties, helping to protect the brain and central nervous system from free radical damage. It also improves oxygen flow to the brain, eyes, and ears.
History
Often called a "living fossil," the Ginkgo biloba tree is the oldest known living tree species. Individual trees may live up to 1,000 years. Legend has it that Chinese monks saved the ginkgo from extinction by planting them in their temples.
