Fenugreek

Description

Annual with tender stem and leaves, it produces white, pea-like, hairy calyxes occurring singly or in pairs. It has compound, oblong leaflets in threes with curved seed pods containing 10-20 smooth brown seeds. Height: 1-2 feet. Blooms midsummer.




Common Uses

Fenugreek is anti-inflammatory and is can be used externally to reduce swelling. It is a mild but effective laxative. The seeds have been used for upset stomachs, inflammation of the respiratory passages, and for lowering blood sugar in people who have elevated blood sugar levels.




History

Benedictine monks brought the plant to Western Europe during the ninth century, where it served many culinary and medicinal purposes, and it has even been used to dye wool yellow.
