Fennel
Family:
Umbelliferae |
Latin Name:
Foeniculum vulgare |
Description
A branching erect stem carries feathery, deep green leaves that branch out alternately. It produces small, yellow flowers that are followed by ovate, ribbed fruits. Height up to 4 feet. Blooms July-October.
Common Uses
Fennel stimulates healthy appetite and digestion, frees up the respiratory system, and soothes coughs and bronchitis. The seeds and root help clean the liver, spleen, gallbladder, and blood.
History
In medieval times, people kept a stash of fennel seeds to nibble on during long church services and fast days--it was thought to suppress appetite. In the 1600s, British herbalist Culpeper wrote that it helped "make people lean that are too fat."
