Eucalyptus

Family:
Myrtaceae
Latin Name:
Eucalyptus globulus

Description

Tall, attractive tree growing up to 195 feet. The trunk is smooth and cream colored with a covering of grayish-blue bark that peels off in narrow strips. Creamy-white flowers are borne on short flat stalks, followed by fruit that is concealed in an aromatic, camphor scented, woody cup.

Common Uses

The essential oil found in the leaves is a powerful antiseptic and is used all over the world for relieving coughs and colds, sore throats, and other infections. The essential oil is a common ingredient in many over-the-counter cold remedies.

History

Introduced into California in the 19th century, and quickly used by desert Indians. Eucalyptus can store quantities of water in its roots, and for this reason, the tree was planted in swampy "fever districts" to dry up the marshes and prevent outbreaks of malaria.
