Elecampane
Family:
Compositae |
Latin Name:
Inula helenium |
Description
Stout round stem that is coarse and woolly, with yellow flowers that resemble sunflowers. The leaves are toothed and bristly on top, velvety underneath. It produces achenes that are brown, quadrangular, and ringed by pale reddish hairs.
Common Uses
European scientists have discovered that elecampane contains a chemical that helps expel intestinal parasites. It is also anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and fungicidal. It helps treat chronic lung conditions such as bronchitis and asthma.
History
A popular Greek legend states that the name helenium came from Helen of Troy, who was supposed to have been holding clumps of this plant when Paris stole her away. The ancient Greek philosopher Pliny said that it could "cause mirth."
