Elderberry

Description

Deciduous shrub with white, wheel-shaped flowers in large terminal clusters. The fruit are berry-like, very juicy, and range from amber, red, black, purple, and blue. Height: 12-50 feet. Blooms in summer.




Common Uses

The berries help coughs, colic, sore throats, asthma, and flu. They have also been taken for rheumatism and erysipelas, and are mildly laxative.




History

Used to dye hair black in ancient Greece, it also happens to show berries at just the right time to signal the beginning of wheat sowing. The wood was formerly used to make musical instruments and mathematical tools.
