Dong Quai

Family:
Apiaceae
Latin Name:
Angelica sinensis

Description

Biennial or perennial with smooth, purplish stems and umbels of white flowers. Height: 3-7 feet. Blooms: May-August

Common Uses

Laboratory studies show that dong quai guards the liver against a variety of toxic substances and strengthens liver function by increasing the liver's ability to use oxygen and glutathione (a powerful antioxidant that protects the liver from free radicals). It also can help lower blood pressure and has been used to treat glaucoma because it reduces the pressure buildup behind the eyes. It helps prevent abnormal blood clotting and strengthens the heart's pumping action.

History

In 1899, the German company Merck sold it as a liquid extract or tablet for menstrual problems. Dong Quai has been used for over 2,000 years to strengthen and regulate women's reproductive function in China.
