Description

Compact, low-growing plant. Flowers: 1 bright yellow, sun-ray flower on a hollow stem. Root: Fleshy taproot, brown with milky, sap-filled core, often 1 foot long and 1/2 inch in diameter. Blooms: April to late Autumn.




Common Uses

Dandelion's bitter compounds stimulate the appetite and promote digestion. Choline, a compound in dandelion, has a laxative effect, and helps prevent degeneration of the liver. Dandelion root is a blood purifier that can help the kidneys and liver improve elimination. It also regulates hormonal imbalances in women.




History

Dandelion is not native to the Midwestern U.S.--it was deliberately introduced to provide food for bees. A legend says that if you pluck a full seed head, whisper a message into it for your beloved, and blow all the seeds away at once, your message would be received.
