Cornsilk

Family:
Gramineae
Latin Name:
Zea mays

Description

Annual grass up to 10 feet high, with plume-like male flowers. Female flowers produce cobs of yellow corn seeds. Corn silk is a soft filament or beard hanging from the husk of the corn cob.

Common Uses

Partly due to its significant potassium content, corn silk is a soothing diuretic for almost all problems of the urinary system. It soothes and relaxes the lining of the bladder, relieves irritation, and improves urine flow and elimination.

History

Corn was used in Incan, Mayan, and American folk medicine to treat bruises, swelling, sores, and boils. Many Central American tribes believed that corn was a gift from the gods. The Aztecs recorded its healing properties in writing.
