Coriander

Coriandrum sativum



Description

Bright green annual with tiny white, pinkish, mauve, or reddish ray flowers in umbels that grows up to 5 feet. It has slender, erect stems and compound, pinnate leaves. Blooms spring to late summer.




Common Uses

Coriander seeds aid digestion, reduce gas, and improve the appetite. The essential oil is used for painful rheumatic joints and muscles and is also antiseptic.




History

The Spanish introduced it to Latin America where both the seeds and especially the leaves are now an integral part of their cuisine. Coriander is also used as a fragrance component in soaps, toiletries and perfume.
