Condurango

Description

Tender, twining evergreen climbing vine, growing up to 30 feet with an aromatic stem up to 24 inches in diameter. It has heart-shaped leaves and funnel-shaped, whitish-green waxy flowers produced in summer.




Common Uses

This bitter plant may be used in a whole range of digestive and stomach problems. The herb is thought to stimulate the liver and pancreas, and may be taken for liver disorders. It also encourages menstruation.




History

The native term condurangu (condor liana) points to the legendary tradition of the Andean condor, which used the leaves of this plant to heal itself from snake bites. The plant is known and highly appreciated in South America, where it is used to cure stomach disorders. It was introduced to Europe in 1871.
