Centaury

Family:
Gentianaceae
Latin Name:
Centaurea erythraea

Description

Biennial herb growing up to 10 inches high with 5-petalled pink flowers in clusters. The leaves occur in a basal rosette. Blooms close in cool temperatures, darkness, when rain approaches, and when touched.

Common Uses

Centaury strengthens digestive function, especially within the stomach. It is useful for dyspepsia and any condition involving sluggish digestion. It stimulates the appetite and increases bile production. Centaury acts on the liver and kidneys, purifies the blood, and is an excellent tonic for the digestive system.

History

In Greek mythology, the centaur Chiron used this herb to treat a poisoned arrow wound. It's so bitter that the ancient Romans called it "bile of the Earth," and it was prescribed for snake bites by Saxon herbalists.
