Cat's Claw

Description

Woody, tropical, climbing vine with long, hook-like spines. It attaches itself to trees and is native to the rainforests of South America.




Common Uses

European physicians prescribe standardized cat's claw for stimulating the immune system. In lab studies, its effects have been anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It has also shown some anti-viral activity. Cat's claw is currently being studied for other uses, including treatment of Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease.




History

Cat’s claw has been used by the Ashaninka Indians of Central Peru to treat asthma, urinary tract inflammation, arthritis, and rheumatism. It has also been used by indigenous peoples to treat general inflammations and to treat wounds.
