Cascara Sagrada
Family:
Rhamnaceae |
Latin Name:
Rhamnus purshiana |
Description
Deciduous shrub with distinctive reddish-gray bark. Tiny, greenish-yellow umbellate flowers and thin elliptical leaves. The fruit turns from scarlet to black when ripe, enclosing 2-3 pea-sized seeds.
Common Uses
The bark is used as a laxative and to treat heart strain, internal strain, and biliousness. Cascara sagrada's primary use is as a gentle laxative, and it is prescribed for this purpose in Europe as well as the U.S. WARNING: DO NOT USE FRESH BARK. DO NOT USE IF YOU HAVE OR DEVELOP DIARRHEA, LOOSE STOOLS, OR ABDOMINAL PAIN.
History
Before the creation of commercial laxatives, American Indians (and settlers) soaked or boiled the bark to get the same results. It was such an effective remedy that the Parke-Davis pharmaceutical company marketed it commercially in 1877, and it earned a spot in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia in 1890.
