Calamus
Family:
Araceae |
Latin Name:
Acorus calamus |
Description
Rush-like; grows in grassy clumps with a height of 2-6 feet and a width of 1 foot. The flowers are yellow-green, very small, jutting out at a 45-degree angle part way up the stem. Only flowers in water.
Common Uses
Chinese studies show that calamus extracts kill bacteria, lower blood pressure by dilating the blood vessels, stop coughing, and eliminate lung congestion. The American species is especially sedative to the central nervous system and stops muscle spasms.
History
Calamus was widely used by Canadian trappers working for the Hudson Bay Company, using it as a stimulant, chewing a small piece whenever tired. The unpeeled, dried rhizome was listed in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia until 1916 and in the National Formulary until 1950.
