Buchu
Family:
Rutaceae |
Latin Name:
Barosma crenulata or Agathosma crenulata |
Description
Aromatic shrub with elongated, opposite, oval leaves and white or pink star-like flowers. The small green fruits are 5-parted capsules that split open to release seeds. Height: 1.5-2.5 meters
Common Uses
Buchu is used internally for urinary tract infections, digestive problems, gout, rheumatism, coughs, and colds. Externally it has been used for its antiseptic properties. It used mostly in South Africa, though it is slowly making its way into western medicine.
History
"Buchu" is an African word for dusting powder, one of the uses of this plant. It is still widely used in household medicine today in South Africa as a tea, brandy tincture, or vinegar, many times for stomach complaints or as a diuretic. It is also used as a black currant flavoring in liquors and as a scent in perfumes.
