Description

Perennial, deciduous, herbaceous plant which often grows up to 4 feet. Erect, branched and woody stem having lilac flowers with purple veins. The fruit resembles tiny, flattened Dutch cheese and is composed of a dozen or more segments containing a single, curved seed. Blooms: June-August




Common Uses

Blue malva is a demulcent, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, astringent, and emollient. It contains tannins, anthocyanin, carotene, and ascorbic acid (vitamin C).




History

A Spanish proverb stated: "A kitchen garden and mallow, sufficient medicines for a home." Both the leaves and seeds can be eaten. For culinary purposes, it is used much like spinach and can be eaten raw or cooked.
