Description

Perennial iris with a thick, coarse stem bearing long, sword-shaped, pale green leaves. Flowers are purple-blue to violet, having white or yellow markings at the base of petals, followed by leathery seed pods. Height: Up to 40 inches. Blooms: May-June




Common Uses

Used to detoxify the body, treat liver diseases, and stimulate the circulatory system. Its detoxifying effect makes it useful to treat pelvic inflammatory disease, herpes, etc. Do not take during pregnancy. WARNING: THE FRESH PLANT IS TOXIC; USE ONLY WHEN DRIED.




History

Some Native American tribes believed that as long as the root's scent permeated skin and clothing, they would not be bitten by snakes. It was listed in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia from 1820-1895 and used for liver conditions, colds, and cholera.
