Bladderwrack
Family:
Fucaceae |
Latin Name:
Fucus vesiculosus |
Description
Strong-smelling, fan-shaped seaweed with a thin, leathery texture. The perennial frond is yellow to brownish green in color and 3 feet long.
Common Uses
It is one of the most prolific sources of natural iodine and trace elements. It is also used for rheumatism. Due to the iodine content, bladderwrack is taken for under active thyroid glands and as an antigoiter remedy.
History
Bladderwrack has been employed as a fuel, as a winter feed for cattle, and as a source of iodine and potash. It has been used medicinally since antiquity. Iodine was first discovered by distillation of Fucus in the early nineteenth century, and for about 50 years, most commercial supplies of Iodine were obtained in this way.
