Black Walnut

Family:
Juglandaceae
Latin Name:
Juglans nigra

Description

Deciduous tree with almost black bark divided into rough ridges by deep, narrow furrows. Alternate leaflets are finely toothed and come 12-23 per stem. Scented flowers are followed by clusters of 2-3 shelled fruit in thick, fleshy, aromatic husks. Blooms: May-June. Height: 120 feet or more

Common Uses

Taken internally, black walnut is useful against fungal and parasitic infections. The extract is useful against skin parasites, such as ringworm. The juice is considered useful for treating tapeworms. It has also been quite popular for treating inflammation.

History

To Romans, it was "acorn of Jupiter," a highly valued item. It’s the only nut in the world to have been granted a protected designation of origin to ensure its quality, and walnuts have been grown in France since the 11th century.
