Description

Perennial with long, stiff, sharply pointed, sword-like leaves. Creamy white bell-like flowers appear on tall stalks from the center of the plant followed by fruits in green pods. Blooms: May-September




Common Uses

Yucca is used for arthritis, rheumatism, gout, urethritis, and prostates. The saponins in yucca may help give it anti-inflammatory properties. Yucca is also a laxative and an alterative. The amino acids in yucca leaves have been shown to inhibit viruses.




History

Thousands of years ago, American Indians used yucca roots and stems to make soap. From the leaf fibers, they made blankets, ropes, nets, hats, shoes, mattresses, baskets, paint brushes, and clothing.
