Description

Tropical evergreen tree with reddish brown bark, oblong or elliptical leaves, and clusters of small yellow flowers. Winged seeds follow the flowers. Height: Up to 100 feet. Native to West Africa. Not cultivated.




Common Uses

Yohimbe contains a component called yohimbine that is used as a sexual stimulant. Yohimbine is FDA-approved for impotence. It is also a broader glandular tonic that works on the adrenals, gonads, thyroid, and pituitary glands. WARNING: Yohimbe is an MAO inhibitor, so it may be unsafe to take with sedatives, tranquilizers, antihistamines, narcotics, or alcohol. CONSIDERED UNSAFE BY THE FDA.




History

Once used as an aphrodisiac and mild hallucinogen as well as a sacrament for marriage. It has not been greatly research, and its many known hazards make yohimbe an herb to admire from afar.
