Woodruff
Family:
Rubiaceae |
Latin Name:
Galium odoratum |
Description
Perennial ground cover, it has small, funnel-shaped white flowers in loose cymes. The leaves are narrow, lanceolate, in whorls of 6-8 around the stem. Fruit: 1/2 inch long, ribbed, and bristly. Height: 8 inches.
Common Uses
A light sedative, woodruff treats nervous tension. It has many other healthful properties, as well, including anodyne, antispasmodic, calmative, diuretic, cardiac, and diaphoretic. It aids digestion and is helpful in treating liver obstructions and hepatitis. Woodruff also reduces inflammation.
History
In Germany, it is used to flavor May wine, traditionally shared on each day of May. The leaves produce a hay-and-vanilla scent when dried. Woodruff yields a tan and a red dye, depending on the part of the plant used.
