Wintergreen

Family:
Ericaceae
Latin Name:
Gaultheria procumbens

Description

Creeping perennial evergreen producing round red berries from late summer-winter. Height: 4 inches. Blooms: White blossoms in July

Common Uses

Wintergreen is strongly anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and soothing to the digestive system. It is effective for rheumatic and arthritic problems, and heals chronic mucous discharge. The essential oil relieves inflamed, swollen, or sore ligaments, muscles, and joints. Tea from the leaves is used to treat colds, flu, fever, and muscle pain because leaves contain methyl salicylate (reduces pain, fever, and inflammation).

History

Wintergreen has been used as a flavoring for gum, candy, toothpaste, and birch beer. The commercial pain reliever Ben-Gay uses wintergreen's active constituent.
