Description

Annual, herbaceous plant with green or reddish stems and white juice. The leaves can vary between entire and lanceolate to pinnately lobed and toothed, and flowers are pale yellow. Blooms: Early summer to early fall. Height: Up to 10 feet.




Common Uses

In combination, it is used to treat coughs. Wild lettuce is also known to be a mild diaphoretic and diuretic, easing colic. It also helps relieve headaches. An infusion is used to treat fevers.




History

Produces a milky latex that becomes firm and brown when exposed to air. This sap was once thought to have a sleep-producing effect. The Roman emperor Augustus was so grateful to the healing powers of lettuce that he had a statue and altar erected in the plant's honor.
