Wild Cherry

Description

Shrub or small tree in leaf all year. It has reddish to dark brown branches with sharply toothed leaves. Cherries ripen from October to February.




Common Uses

Wild cherry bark is useful in treating respiratory ailments such as coughs, colds, and influenza. It is also used for stomach inflammations and acidosis. The turpentine from the bark's resin is used internally to treat kidney and bladder complaints, as well as treating rheumatic affections. It is also diuretic and antiseptic.




History

The wood is highly valued by cabinet makers and its bark was used heavily by American Indian tribes as a system cleanser and laxative.
