Valerian
Family:
Valerianaceae |
Latin Name:
Valeriana officinalis |
Description
Herbaceous perennial with erect, grooved, hollow and hairy stem, bearing four to eight pairs of leaves. It has small, tubular, pink-tinged flowers and dark green simple leaves. Height: 3-5 feet. Blooms: June
Common Uses
Valerian is known to improve overall sleep quality, shorten the length of time it takes to fall asleep, and help people sleep more soundly. Several studies have also shown that valerian reduces depression, nervousness, and anxiety.
History
Valerian, when dried, has a distinctly unpleasant smell to humans, but cats and rats love it. It is rumored that the Pied Piper of Hamelin used valerian along with his flute to lure away that town's rats. Valerian was listed in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia from 1820 to 1942.
