Description

Sprawling shrub with woody and densely prickled stems extending up to 15 feet. Hairy dark green leaves are grouped in threes or fives. White or pale pink flowers follow. Fleshy black berries can appear along with flowers. Blooms: Mid-summer to mid-autumn




Common Uses

The root-bark and leaves are strongly astringent, depurative, diuretic, tonic, and vulnerary. Blackberry leaf tea is a remedy for diarrhea and hemorrhoids.




History

Another name for blackberry is "bramble" referring to its prickly stems. The ancient Greeks used blackberry to treat gout. In European folk medicine, blackberry leaves have long been used to wash and staunch wounds.
