Common Uses

Tormentil is used for many stomach and intestinal complaints, such as diarrhea, enteritis, colitis, gastritis, and gastric and intestinal bleeding. It is able to strength the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestines, and treats inflammatory and infectious processes in both the large and small intestines. It also promotes healing throughout the body, disinfecting and repairing broken blood vessels in mucous membranes.

History

It was called the "torment plant" in medieval times because physicians thought it could cure any pain. In industry the rhizomes are used to make a red dye for tanning leather. It has been used externally to treat skin blemishes and sores.
