Tarragon

Family:
Compositae
Latin Name:
Artemisia dracunculus

Description

Aromatic perennial grown for its distinctly flavored leaves. Flowers are yellow or greenish-white in terminal panicles but are usually sterile. The leaves are linear to lanceolate, undivided, born singly at the top and in threes below. Height: Up to two feet.

Common Uses

Tarragon leaves are used to settle upset stomach, promote menstruation, and as a diuretic. They are also often used to help eliminate toxins from the body by aiding digestion and speeding up the digestive process. Tarragon has been shown to fight intestinal worms in children. In adults, it also alleviates insomnia, hyperactivity, and depression.

History

Pilgrims in the Middle Ages put sprigs of tarragon in their shoes before beginning long trips on foot to prevent fatigue. Mysteriously, chewing the leaves can numb the tongue.
