Description

Tall spreading stems with a height of 4 feet and a width of 2-3 feet. It has bright yellow, button-like flowers and feather, fern-like, multi-divided leaves. It is very pungent and blooms July to September.




Common Uses

The constituent thujone kills intestinal roundworms and threadworms, scabies, and heals other infected skin conditions. Very small doses have been used to treat epilepsy and to encourage menstruation. Tansy has been used externally with benefit for some eruptive diseases of the skin, and the green leaves, when pounded and applied to skin, relieve sprains and allay the swelling.




History

In England, tansy puddings were traditional Easter fare. It is one of the bitter herbs eaten with unleavened bread during the Passover celebration. Benedictine monks immortalized this plant through the famous bitter tonic liqueur Benedictine.
