Strawberry

Family:
Rosaceae
Latin Name:
Fragaria vesca

Description

Deciduous, herbaceous perennial, spreading by runners or stolons. Single white flowers on stems are followed by red or white berries with numerous yellow seeds on the outside. Blooms: April to July

Common Uses

The leaves, fruits, and roots may be used. Strawberry is high in iron and the fruits contain salicylic acid, making them beneficial in treating kidney and liver complaints. Strawberry leaves are often used in teas because of their diuretic and astringent properties. Externally, the fruit can be used to treat sunburn, and the leaves are applied to the skin to treat sores.

History

In Shakespeare's Othello, Othello gave Desdemona a handkerchief embroidered with strawberries. The peoples of Lapland mix strawberries with reindeer milk and blueberries to make a pudding. The fruit has been used in skin-care creams and as a tooth-whitener.
