Stone Root

Description

Tall bush with straight, rigid stems and oval, coarsely toothed leaves. The root is brown-gray and stone hard. Height: 1-4 feet. Lemon-scented flowers bloom July to September.




Common Uses

The root of stone root is used to strengthen weak veins (such as varicose veins) by reducing back pressure on the veins. It also has a tonic action on the bowels and is effective for treating hemorrhoids caused by constipation with vascular blockage. It is also prescribed to counteract fluid retention. Taken externally, stone root is used to heal wounds, sores, bruises, and inflammation.




History

Known as "clergyman's friend" because it soothes hoarse or sore throats, stone root was used by Native Americans to scent their bodies and cleanse cuts or wounds.
