Description

Hardy, branched perennial shrub, spearmint has bright green leaves and pink to lilac flowers in slender cylindrical spikes. Height: 2.5 feet. Blooms: August-September




Common Uses

Spearmint tea is used to treat fevers, headaches, and digestive disorders. Externally, it is used to treat bruises. Spearmint's healing properties are anti-emetic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, diuretic, restorative, stimulant, and stomachic. Spearmint is still listed in the Hungarian Pharmacopoeia as a medicine.




History

Spearmint is thought to be the oldest of all mints. It was often used in the ancient world to keep milk from curdling, and is probably the mint mentioned in the Bible.
