Shiitake

Description

Gilled mushrooms ranging in color from light amber to dark brown. Native to Asia, they are most often found growing on fallen trees.




Common Uses

Shiitake research, mostly done in Asia, has shown that it may help boost the immune system, thereby helping the body fight off infections. It has also been shown in some studies to help normalize weakened livers and possibly lower cholesterol.




History

In Japan, shiitake mushrooms are often a prescription rather than dinner, where they are popularly used medicinally. During China's Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), these mushrooms were thought to improve stamina, circulation, and overall good health.
