Scullcap
Family:
Lamiaceae |
Latin Name:
scutellaria lateriflora |
Description
Perennial growing up to 1 foot tall with thin, sharply pointed, oval leaves. Small, blue flowers appear in clusters on the upper-stems. Blooms: June-September
Common Uses
Scullcap is used for a range of nervous disorders, including nervousness, agitations, insomnia, and hysteria. The leaves help relieve anxiety, depression, nervous headaches, nervous twitches, muscle cramps, and convulsions. Some studies have shown scullcap to reduce blood pressure and lower cholesterol. It is also an effective sedative and stabilizes stress-related heart disease.
History
Scullcap was once such a well-known remedy for rabies that it was called "mad-dog weed." It was an ingredient in many 19th century patent medicines to treat "female weakness" and epilepsy.
