Sarsaparilla

Family:
Smilacaceae
Latin Name:
Smilax officinalis

Description

Perennial climber with erect, semi-woody stems and sharp thorns. The leaves are large, prominently veined, and alternately stalked. Small, greenish flowers are followed by black berries.

Common Uses

Sarsaparilla is considered to be excellent for chronic hepatic disorders and some venereal diseases. It is anti-inflammatory, and can bring relief to skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, and itchiness. Sarsaparilla also has progesterogenic actions, making it beneficial in premenstrual problems, and the debility and depression associated with menopause.

History

The name "Sarsaparilla" is Spanish for "bramble vine." It was used in the Caribbean and by Native Americans to keep oneself young and vigorous, and for skin conditions. It was used to treat syphilis in Europe's great epidemic of 1494, and cowboys often ordered it after visiting the brothel in the 1800s.
