Description

Shrub with finely toothed, dark green leaves showing light green underneath. White snowball-like flowers on long stalks appear on the upper plant, followed by seed pods resembling horned acorns. Height: Up to 3 feet. Blooms: May-July




Common Uses

Red Root helps prevent the buildup of congested fluids in the lymphatic tissue as well as clearing out isolated fluid cysts. It can also help with an enlarged spleen, inflamed tonsils, enlarged lymph nodes, and adenoid enlargements.




History

Given the name "New Jersey Tea" for its use as a tea during the American Revolutionary War. The plant has been used to treat gonorrhea, dysentery, and eye disease in children. A commercial preparation of the bark was used to prevent hemorrhaging after surgery.
