Pumpkin

Family:
Cucurbitaceae
Latin Name:
Cucurbita pepo

Description

Trailing annual vine with long, branched stems up to 20 feet bearing large, triangular lobed leaves. Funnel-shaped, deep yellow flowers appear, swelling and ripening into bright orange, ribbed fruit. Blooms: July-September

Common Uses

Pumpkin seeds are used as a remedy for internal parasites. They are very mild and safe for pregnant women, children, and those weakened by other conditions. Pumpkin seeds are also diuretic, helping the body wash out toxins. The seeds contain significant amounts of zinc as well.

History

Mayans applied the plant sap to burns. A mix of ground pumpkin seeds with water, milk, or honey was so popular in North America as a worm remedy that the medical profession eventually adopted it as standard practice.
