Description

Delicate annual growing up to 3 feet, with an erect, hairy stem. that bears lance-shaped basal leaves and incised stem leaves. The 2-inch wide red flowers have black anthers. It has small rounded seed capsules. Blooms: May-October.




Common Uses

The flowers are mildly analgesic and sedative. They also reduce nervous over-activity. The herb is used for insomnia. Unlike its relative, the opium poppy, it is non-addictive.




History

The red poppy, though not a native plant, has become a symbol of remembrance for America's war dead. A paper poppy is often worn on Memorial Day. Country women in Eastern Europe used poppies as rouge.
