Description

Perennial evergreen shrub with waxy branches that grows up to 35 feet. It produces yellowish flowers in catkins from March to April, followed by nutlets that are coated in a thick, whitish gray wax.

Common Uses

Bayberry is an astringent. It is also often used to increase circulation, stimulate perspiration, and keep bacterial infections in check. It can be used internally for colds, fevers, flu, excess mucus, diarrhea, and colitis. Do not use while pregnant.

History

Bayberry is still used to make candles because of its waxy coating. Burning a bayberry candle on Christmas day until it burns itself out was supposed to bring good luck. It has also been used to make lather shaving cream and soap.
