Papaya
Family:
Caricaceae |
Latin Name:
Carica papaya |
Description
A palm-like, tropical, herbaceous perennial tree growing very rapidly to 25 feet. It is gray-brown and scarred, being of a fleshy woody substance. It is soft and hollow. The melon-like fruits are berries and can weigh up to 22 pounds.
Common Uses
Papaya's main medicinal use is as a digestive agent. Papain, contained in the plant's whitish juice (or latex), is an enzyme that breaks up protein. It is prescribed for people who have difficulty digesting protein and is used to break up blood clots after surgery.
History
Papaya juice, shoots, and latex were used in Mayan herbal medicine. Today in Latin America its leaves are used as a meat tenderizer. The Australian aborigines use the seeds as an aphrodisiac.
